INSURANCE POINTS
If your citation is for a moving violation, it may have insurance implications. A major factor in determining what a motorist pays for motor vehicle insurance is the number of insurance points on his or her driving record. The point system for moving violations is administered by the North Carolina Department of Insurance and is different from the DMV point system.  A single citation can increase your insurance costs and, if you accumulate points under this system, you will experience a substantial increase in your premiums. As shown in the chart below, a conviction on a charge that assigns 3 insurance points will increase the amount of your insurance bill by 65%. Points remain in effect for three policy years and affect the entire policy (not only the liability portion).  Although not a rule, we have discovered many major insurance companies have not penalized their customers for one point offenses. Of course, it is recommended you contact your insurance company should you have any questions.
